Just when you begin to expect a predictable, dummy CM transforms into Rowdy CM - and that's when the magic happens. NOTA may not be your run-of-the-mill political drama, but it's gripping and keeps you entertained. Seasoned actors like Nasser and Sathyaraj are ever dependable, while Mehreen doesn't get much scope to a shine in a poorly etched role of a journalist. NOTA marks another memorable performance for this young actor, who's emerging as a force to reckon with. Vijay is in his element as the irresponsible loafer, but when he takes control as CM, his versatility as an actor comes to the fore. Film after film, we've see him play this character - and yet, somehow it seems to work. We've gotten used to watching Vijay Deverakonda play the irresponsible youngster, who drinks and parties all the time, speaks unparliamentary language and refuses to take responsibility for his actions. Varun's relationship with his father is extremely complicated, but the director doesn't shed much light on it. The track involving an evil Godman or Satyaraj's love story in the past, seems unnecessary. For instance, the track featuring Varun's hacker friend Wong (Priyadarshi) who tries to uncover money from shell companies in Panama, is far from convincing. While the political mind games work, the film often deviates from its basic plot and is not always convincing. Another MLA refuses to send relief material to affected villages without a party sticker on it - "The people should know who's doing the work, right?" he quips. The clueless MLAs keep wondering to themselves 'Vaaru veeru room enti? Evari room' (whose room are they talking about?). There's a telling scene when CM Varun asks for a war room to be setup to tackle the flood-like situation in the state. NOTA's depiction of politicians bowing down before their leader and sitting in positions of power without any knowledge, is spot on. The internal squabbles within politicians and the mind games between parties are shown beautifully.

NOTA's strengths are undoubtedly its political scenes. Aided by Mahindra (Satyaraj), he takes control and shakes up the political scenario. And yet, at a time of crisis, Varun doesn't want to sit on the sidelines as a dummy. He's made to tie the dhoti, goes hungover to the Governor's office for his swearing-in, avoids press conferences and signs official documents while playing games at home. And hence, this video game obsessed party-goer becomes the CM. Varun is asked to be a dummy CM for two weeks, until the court clears him of all charges. This sudden situation arises after his father and CM Vasudev (Nasser) resigns as chief minister while facing corruption charges. Instead of arresting him, the police inform him that he is about to become the state's new chief minister. Varun (Vijay Deverakonda) is caught drinking and driving in the middle of the night while celebrating his birthday with his friends.

NOTA, despite its glaring loopholes, is an engaging thriller that keeps you hooked right through 149-minute runtime. Here, the CM plays the political game - it deals with internal party politics, MLAs who are nothing but yes men with zero administrative skills and resort politics. And yet, NOTA is nothing like Bharat Ane Nenu. He too is reluctant, and when pushed against the wall, he delivers. Like Bharat, he too is suddenly thrust into politics and made CM overnight.
